A lovely pair of old Spiers 'Plane. o Ayr' smoothing planes.
These came out of the same old carpenters toolbox - they are genuine working planes, probably unused and as they were, since between the wars. I have cleaned them up minimally, only to check that all is ok and so I can tell you what I am selling.
So no 1, the one with the completely round knob. Originally this knob had a piece missing - I got it repaired by Wayne Burks - check out the job here https://www.facebook.com/share/nB7hkYawM2ob1HPT/?mibextid=WC7FNe Wayne is a top craftsman, and a gentleman.
Back to the plane, two things you should know. 1. the handle is very slightly loose - it is screwed in from the bottom and the screw is tight. I decided to leave it to a more skilled operator. 2. There is a tiny (and I mean tiny) chip/miscasting on the back corner - see pics. generally, the plane is lovely.
Plane no 2. All good. The knob is not round, and the handle leans slightly to one side - no idea what's going on there. I would describe the bed of the plane as having slight to medium pitting. All in all it's a lovely plane too.
Both planes have the original irons - mighty thick and heavy too. Both the same style but obviously coming from different moulds.
Seems a shame to split this pair up now, after all these years, but I will if they don't sell as a pair.
